On February 4th, Changjiang Daily Wuhan App reported that a meeting about how to grow taller was held in Wushang Dream Plaza over the weekend. 300 groups of parents and children listened to expert lectures, shared their personal experiences, and rode spinning bikes to store energy for the upcoming "spring growth season".
A mother from Zhong Xiang came on stage and said that regularly coming to Wuhan for height testing and treatment is not easy for the mother and son. Both she and her husband are at a low average height, and testing showed that the child can be intervened with medication. But the child's grandmother is not very happy and worried that the medication may have side effects. The disagreement between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law has filled the home with an atmosphere of anxiety. This time, she invited her child's grandmother to listen to professional opinions together.
A mother who is about 1.65 meters tall came on stage to share. She claimed that her husband is 1.8 meters tall, and the couple has high expectations for their child's height. Last autumn, her child was in the first year of junior high school and reached a height of 1.74 meters. However, in the past six months, perhaps due to excessive academic pressure and lack of coordination in daily life, his height development has been in a stagnant state, which has made her feel very anxious.
According to the estimates, the prevalence of dwarfism in China is around 3%, with approximately 7 million dwarfism patients. Among them, growth hormone deficiency in children accounts for about 10-20%, with only a very small number of children receiving effective treatment. Parents generally have misconceptions about their children's growth and development, which are intertwined with anxiety, extending a developmental problem to a psychological one.
Professor Jin Runming from the Department of Pediatrics at Union Medical Hospital said, "Many parents are very concerned about their children's height. In order to help their children grow taller, they blindly believe in folk remedies or give their children excessive supplements of so-called nutrients and height enhancing drugs, which leads to malnutrition, obesity, precocious puberty, and other problems. Instead, it leads to premature closure of the epiphyseal line, and the child's height does not meet expectations."
"Being short is not only affects a child's outlook and temperament, but also easily leads to feelings of inferiority. Parents should avoid blindly waiting to avoid missing the best intervention expectations," said Professor Lin Hanhua from the Pediatrics Department of Tongji Hospital.
The <<"Healthy China 2030" Plan >>emphasizes the need to reduce the growth retardation rate of children under 5 years old from 8.1% in 2013 to less than 5% by 2030. In order to promote the attention of the whole society to the issue of children's growth and development, the People's Daily <<Health Times>>have launched the "China Children's Growth and Development Health Communication Action" since 2013. So far, they have visited more than 600 hospitals, invited well-known pediatric experts to popularize knowledge about children's growth and development, and carried out free clinics. This event in Han is organized by Pleiades Children's Hospital.
Wang Xiaoling, the leader of the growth and development discipline at the hospital, introduced that Wuhan Pleiades Children's Hospital has been carrying out height management work for three years and is the first medical institution in Wuhan to carry out annual height management. Over the past three years, more than 3000 children have participated in bone age testing, with over 1000 children participating in annual height management. Pleiades customizes personalized growth plans for children through precise detection and evaluation, providing multi-disciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment services such as diet, nutrition, exercise, sleep, psychology, and endocrine. Currently, many children have achieved their ideal height through height management and growth hormone treatment here.
At the event site, Pleiades Children's Hospital has also set up a free consultation and testing area. The medical staff of the growth and development specialty, sports rehabilitation department, and ophthalmology department of the hospital provide free height and weight measurement, bone age testing, foot scanning, posture evaluation, and vision screening for the children present, and provide expert consultation services to help parents understand their children's current growth and development level and potential, and identify health problems.
Tips
How do parents judge whether a child's height development is in line with rhythm?
Director Ye Jianhong from the Growth and Development Department of Wuhan Pleiades Children's Hospital introduced that the growth and development of children follow a regular pattern. Generally, a normal full-term newborn has a body length of about 50 centimeters, and the fastest growth occurs in the first year after birth, with a body length increase of 20-25 centimeters. The annual body length increases by 8-10 centimeters at the age of 1-3. From the age of 3 to before the puberty period (i.e. girls 10 years old and boys 12 years old), the height increases by 5-7 centimeters per year. Adolescence once again enters a period of rapid growth, during which boys can grow by 20-30 centimeters in height and girls can grow by 15-25 centimeters. Parents should regularly monitor their children's height. If they find that their height growth does not match the above pattern or deviates from the genetic target height growth curve, they should pay attention and seek medical attention in a timely manner to find the cause.
Parents need to approach their children's height issues rationally, as genetics and the environment they live in are important influencing factors.
